Changing Nutrition Feb 2020

This will more than likely be one of many posts based around a ketogenic diet and Low Carb Healthy Fat (LCHF) way of living. I have a bias towards this as my diabetes has made it incredibly difficult to keep a diet higher in carbohydrates (carbs).

In my quest for my own health and armed with the knowledge gained with over 20 years in the fitness industry, helping people become healthier, there are some great things which I would like to share with you. This is by no means a final word on the subject which is why I have dated this to see the progress of knowledge surrounding this area.

There have been reports of social media being suppressed over claims about the new dietary trends, so hopefully this is just rumours.

The food industry has a notorious habit of stretching the truth when it comes to advertising their products. Not something that can be blamed as there is little money to be made from a simple pork chop or a bunch of spinach. People generally need some form of motivation to buy things and when someone is selling they want you to buy their item over another. This was where we went wrong with the still surviving margarine industry. Although the promotion of vegetable fats may have been a good idea, there was no knowledge base about the harm transfats would do. The bleaching process to make original margarine products look and smell appealing was also not considered harmful. This is just an example and not meant as a judgement on whether to eat butter or margarine. The advertising world made products like lard and tallow appear like the unhealthy or undesirable option when there still isn't any proof that is the case.

The great news is that scientific knowledge is constantly evolving and moving forward. We know things now that have completely debunked things we thought just 20 years ago to be certain. As we learn more about our bodies and minds we can do more with what we have, An example could be someone who has the latest android or apple phone. They could use it for receiving and making phone calls only. If someone shows them all the things it can do, it suddenly becomes a whole lot more useful, it hasn't changed what it was though.

One of the most useful pieces of knowledge we have found is that the brain does not rely exclusively on glucose. We have found it can run better on ketones, as can cardiac muscles of the heart. We also know that the body can produce its own glucose when needed and that insulin is not essential in the uptake of glucose into the muscles.

Available food is becoming more processed and people are getting 'sold' on more processed varieties being more advantageous (not necessarily better for your health) by freeing up precious time. Looking around the big supermarkets it can be difficult to find food that hasn't been tampered with. It is important that we try to buck the trend of easy meals before we become addicted to our food. Is saving a small amount of money to eat larger portions of poor quality food really worth it?

I hope to explore this subject in greater detail in future blog posts, it's hard for me to not get carried away as my research has been immense due to being sick from my old way of eating. As my health improves, hopefully a shared knowledge base to help others who may be looking for a better journey.

Stay Healthy!
