Once again I find myself making a huge upheaval as I prepare to leave for another country.
After over a year of trying to recover and then when I finally became certified as a diabetes specialist in nutrition and exercise, we go into the lockdown. My health is better, although I am in no way completely recovered, in some ways I have grown stronger, especially mentally.
I haven't been sitting on my laurels. I have been delving deep into the world of coding, it's been great, there is an incredible amount of resources available to learn everything you could need.
As I write this there is news that the government is thinking about applying a new digital tax to online sales to get people offline and into the high streets. Online business is here whether we like it or not, trying to stick to the old way of doing things by taxing people doesn't really seem to be very useful to me.
I have noticed that in over 20 years of training people that the world of training has changed considerably.
What was once only shared on a one to one basis is now broadcast to millions by one person. This has led to a lot of charismatic charlatans misleading people. You can see the controversies of influencers who are using fake weights and lie about their diets or drug taking to get the bodies they have.
There are also a lot of really good people teaching online, the only thing is that often you need a good background in physiology to tell the real from the fake.
I get asked a lot when I will train online. The problem for me is I don't feel comfortable with it. I have seen a lot of people injure themselves because they have developed bad habits. When nobody is actually present to correct a bad habit, it just carries on until we get injured.
A good idea might be to see if you could get a trainer to come and check your form once a month or every six weeks and check that everything is good or even discuss ways you could improve. Remember to ask questions a lot and use those times with a trainer to improve your techniques. You can always chat later about your personal life. (really about 15 mins after the session as you stretch should be enough, not while you are supposed to be doing cardio)
My tech studies are done 100% online, luckily I also have real life interaction with coders and developers that I can bounce ideas off. This helps me improve a lot more than when I am just on my own. Look after your body, you want to be moving forwards with your health or at least maintaining it.
As I prepare for my journey to another new place, something more rural, I will leave London, who knows if the old smoke will draw me back again. Moving is what's important though to stop us getting static.
In the words of Harold Wilson; "He who rejects change is the architect of decay. The only human institution which rejects progress is the cemetery".
Stay Healthy!
Seb.
