Getting Fruity.

Something those of you who have been involved in the 'fitness' Industry may have been exposed to was the rather dubious claims that eating fruit was to be avoided due to the sugar content of it and the other spin-offs of insulin problems (which is more to do with sucrose than fructose).

Great news for those of you who were sticking to eating your fruit though, already there have been so many benefits exposed to fruit eating (that we don't have time to go into here), the latest evidence out has shown that the humble watermelon can help post-workout recovery.

The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry reports that one of the naturally occurring elements within the fruit aids in lactic acid removal. It also goes on to state that the amino acid L-citrulline, is the component responsible. L-citrulline has been found to improve many athletes and also to improve erection for men. This has been attributed to the greater Nitric Oxide(NO) synthesis which helps transport glucose into the muscles. In turn the report suggests that due to the effects of greater recovery the athlete could workout harder not just due to the increased glycogen to the muscles, but also the removal of lactic acid from the muscles.

The findings may mean that natural ingredients could be used instead of drugs, Researchers from the Technical University of Cartagena in Spain, hope. This suggests future research should look at the levels of the amino acid required "for reduction of muscle fatigue and other health benefits in stress, athletic performance, and cardiovascular disease".
