So we know sugar can be bad for us, although it tastes amasing and can leave us in a mild state of ecstasy, depending on how and how much of it we consume. Spanish researchers, however, have now identified another link between obesity and diabetes and cancer.
With 16% of children reaching obesity levels in some European states, how obesity and/or diabetes is linked to cancer has been of great importance to the researchers at the University Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid. Dr. Custodia Garcia-Jimenez, lead researcher, has identified that the intestines respond in a certain way to high sugar levels that triggers greater production of a hormone (GIP) used by the body to limit acid in the stomach(I will talk about acid/alkaline diets sometimes to clients - Seb). This hormone is controlled by a protein called β-catenin, so more GIP=more β-catenin as the body tries to find balance (homoeostasis).
This is where the real link between cancer and high sugar has been identified. Large accumulations of β-catenin have been linked to many cancers developing. Dr. Custodia García-Jimenez said "We were surprised to realize that changes in our metabolism caused by dietary sugar impact on our cancer risk. We are now investigating what other dietary components may influence our cancer risk. Changing diet is one of easiest prevention strategies that can potentially save a lot of suffering and money."
It is estimated that at least 1 in 3 of the main cancers (27-39%) can be prevented by improving diet, physical activity and body composition. Balancing the amount of sugars, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals should be of utmost importance to all of us. Whole grains, fruits, vegetables and natural sources of proteins should be taken in moderation. Contact me if you need further advice regarding diet.
