'Instant' massage proved to help healing process of the body when muscle fibres suffer from exercise induced damage.
New research
from The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center confirms for the first
time the measurable effects of massage-like pressure on the recovery of muscle
fibre damage. It had already been proven that early massage after injury can result in less swelling and fewer signs of inflammation, but what this new study aimed to find out was for how long and what kind of pressure gave the best results.
Dr. Thomas Best, who was leading the study, is a firm believer that engineering is the best remedy to Health Care problems. He also expressed his excitement about the clinical implications of the research saying, “After testing in humans, we’ll potentially be able to prescribe specifics for massage to help exercise-induced muscle injury in athletes.”
To use one of my favourite historical characters as an example, Hippocrates wrote more than 2000 years ago :
Vigorous massage constricts and firms up the body.
Gentle massage relaxes the body.
Much massage thins and lightens the body.
Moderate massage thickens the body, and increases the flesh.
Might have been quicker to look in the history books first?
