Research carried out at the Tehran University of Medical Sciences has recently shown that regular massage with essential oils helps to combat the negative symptoms of menopause.
Reuters Health interviewed Dr Hilda Hutcherson, a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at Columbia University Medical Centre in New York, who was not involved in the study. She said "With the symptoms the study measured it makes sense that massages could make some women feel better."
The essential oils used for the massage were lavender oils, Dr. Hutcherson said there is an association with lavender oil helping to relax people. Some of the symptoms of menopause can include; irritability, depression and disruptive sleep problems. Although this is not experienced by all women going through the menopause.
If you feel you are suffering from tension and stress, whether going through the menopause or not, you can always try self massage. Finding an oil that is compatible with your body and rubbing it into the soles of your feet before you go to bed has been a traditional remedy for sleeplessness and anxiety. Even Hippocrates advocated a daily rub down as essential for optimum health.
