Strong Arms of the West

Congratulations are in order for the double amputee who has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in sub-zero temperatures on his arms and in his wheelchair.

Spencer West was born with a genetic disorder called sacral agenesis. His legs were amputated at the age of five. His doctors told him he would never be a functioning member of society. Over the years, West has been redefining his own possibilities and inspiring thousands around the world to do the same.  He posted on his blog that he has finally reached the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro after only 7 days of climbing.

Mt. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, it is estimated only 2 out of every 3 able bodied climbers manage to reach the summit and on average 1 person dies each year trying to climb it.

Mr. West has already raised over $500,000 on this climb for charity, specifically for draught ridden areas of Kenya to help them achieve sustainable clean drinking water.  He said, "I set out to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro not only to redefine what's possible for me, but to inspire others to overcome obstacles and challenges of their own, and to give back to communities, that need our help. Reaching the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro was the most mentally and physically challenging thing I have ever done, but in doing so, it reinforced the powerful message behind believing in yourself, and believing in others. So many people made this journey possible for me and I am so humbled by everyone's support."

Spencer West is an inspiration to us all and a great example of what putting your faith in your abilities can achieve.

   Stay Healthy!
