Don't stress me out, man.

One of the major websites aimed at recruiting and networking of senior executive positions claims that most top level executives may jump ship once the economy recovers due to the incredible stress levels being placed on them.

ExecuNet website reported that from research undertaken with over 150 executive recruitment agencies more than half of them believe current workloads as excessively high and a further quarter of them believed it to be the highest they had ever seen.

ExecuNet claims the Consequences Employers Will Face if They Stretch Executives Too Thin could include:
  1. Unexpected executive departures when the white-collar job market improves
  2. Morale problems
  3. Loss of productivity among "burned out" executives
  4. Key performers will disengage or get mired in operations
  5. Difficulty recruiting new executives

Mark M. Anderson, president and chief economist of ExecuNet said "... companies should look for ways to retain executives and keep them engaged in the short-term while also determining how they can help bring relief to executives who've been shouldering too much for too long."

Ways in which you could take charge of the situation yourself would be to engage in less stressful activities.  Gentle exercises and stretches done each day with some quiet time for reflection or meditation will help relieve the stress.  Companies could also run regular 'executive' massage days, yoga, pilates, tai chi, or meditation courses for their employees if they want to improve their chances of keeping them less stressed and staying productive.
