Feeling fuller for longer.

The Telegraph recently published an article on some research into how eating almonds have been shown in studies to aid people to diet and lose weight by allowing people to feel fuller for longer. Original article here.

The interesting part of the findings were that the professor who was leading the study came to the conclusion that by eating almonds which are a relatively low glycemic index (GI) classified food, as oppose to something quite high up on the GI such as cornflakes, this would allow the individual to feel fuller for longer and possibly help throughout the rest of the day.  The idea being that foods which cause blood sugar to spike quickly are more likely to cause more problems to insulin sensitivity.

Over 25 years ago when I was first taking a more serious interest in health and fitness we were taught to eat as many of our fats and proteins in the morning and to finish the day with carbohydrates so that we didn't have a belly full of food still trying to be digested.  This would mean a better nights sleep and the body being able to repair itself for what the next day would throw at it, rather than spending the night digesting your dinner.  (Please also note the ridiculous claim that carbs will 'sit on your belly' if you eat them late at night.  The whole idea of eating more easily digested food in the evening is precisely that it goes into filling the muscles from the days activities.)

If you would like to discuss this, please feel free as there is a lot to write for a small article.  As always the most important thing is balance and not too many total calories in the day.  The actual amount of food you eat should also be taken into consideration.
