Macrobiotic diets haven't really had much in the way of press these days, most probably due to the idea that they are pretty grain heavy and most fitness regimes call for a reduction in carbs. One of the great things about the macrobiotic diet was that you would eat less and eat seasonal vegetables sourced locally.
Although I am not advocating one diet over any others as I believe that every individual has to eat the best they can for the conditions they are experiencing at their present moment. Something that has appeared recently in the news has been how flying vegetables and fruit over from other countries (as part of the transportation process, GM hasn't got that advanced yet!) has been increasing the price of fruit and vegetables generally across the globe.
The idea of getting our food closest to source has so many benefits, Farmer's Markets are everywhere now, and the price doesn't differ too much from the dubious quality that the big chain supermarkets have on offer. The benefits to the environment are well known as more diversity of crops can be gained and pollution may be reduced in the long-term.
