Cut the Cheese or Cut the Mustard?

Today I would like to talk about discipline.  As with most things it is a subjective and relative concept that we choose to take on board or disregard.

If we want to change it is essential, in training the body or the mind, to have discipline.  Discipline is what will push you through the cold mornings when you would rather be sleeping.  It is what will stop you going for that restaurant food or beer with your friends for the 5th night in a row.  As I said it is subjective and you can find your own reasons for having discipline.

Here's a bit of a surprise for some of you, discipline can be learnt.  In fact the reason anyone really has discipline is that somewhere along the line somebody taught them how to have it.  Whether by another's example or having it forced upon us we can learn how to use discipline to shape ourselves into the person we would like to be.

Try to find ways to teach yourself to be disciplined, look for examples of disciplined behaviour you think you can copy.  As your discipline improves then so will your ability to be more disciplined.  For some the fact that someone can get up 3 times a week and organise their own workout routine, or can avoid eating sugar and processed foods may be the pinnacle of their idea of discipline.  Others may find that the need to organise almost every hour of the day is their idea of good discipline.  As I mentioned, it is relative to you and your intentions.

The most important thing is to stick to values you believe to be true and not get caught up with the herd.  Remember also that sometimes the best discipline can be to know when to relax the rules without losing your way.

Stay Healthy!
