A recent report detailing the 5 year study of the Orangutans of Borneo and how they adapt to periods of food deprivation could show how humans can live perfectly well on less food, and more importantly less protein.
Although the study was not carried out with human subjects, it is thought that the Orangutans have a similar body system to that of our early ancestors.
The study showed that Orangutans would store more fat during times of abundance when calorific intake was higher and they could eat as they wished. However, the more interesting effects measured were during the times of deprivation when their bodies would adapt to the environment by burning the stored fats and demand less protein to keep equilibrium in the body. This can only add to the need for humans to officially take part in more studies where calorie deficiency is measured with effect to health.
As has been mentioned many times before, there are countless reports showing the benefits of ingesting fewer calories on a regular basis in animals and humans.
The advice might then be, if you want to achieve weight loss, to follow a controlled diet where fewer calories are consumed. It is essential though to make sure you will still have all the vitamins and minerals you need to stay healthy. Contact me if you need more info.
