Smoking, as we all know, is terrible for not just your health but those around you also. Due to shifts in cultural habits across the globe, we now have the ability to see not just how people are benefiting from avoiding smoke and smoking but we also get a chance to see the damage it does to communities when they pick up the habit.
Bangalore now has about 28% of it's population using tobacco products, it is also estimated that 80% of children between the ages of 15 - 17 now smoke. Add to this the increase in pollution as they try to become more industrial and you can see what the health hazards are.
The National Cancer Registry programme of India goes as far to state that for every 10 men unaffected by Lung Cancer there are 107 with it.
There has also been a marked rise in the youth levels of lung cancer. Dr Jagannath Dixit, consultant, surgical oncologist,at Bangalore's HCG hospital stated that he recently treated a 25 year old man with adenocarcinoma of the lung. He had a history of chain smoking his way through college and then fell into regular tobacco use afterwards. He also went on to say that 25% of people with lung cancer could have no apparent symptoms until an X-Ray is performed to highlight the lungs.
