England, UK:
Further evidence has been surfacing of the complimentary health benefits of Yoga. One of the latest studies goes on to suggest a regular Yoga practise could even be better than just receiving the current GP care alone.
The University of York has recently completed a 12 month study on the effects of Yoga as a viable non-drug related therapy to back pain management. The findings of the study, which was published recently in The Annals of Internal Medicine this week suggested that people's ability to carry out everyday functions such as getting dressed or standing for long periods of time improved even 9 months after the classes had finished.
At present Severe Back Pain effects about 80% of the population at least once in their life, with some suffering extremely long bouts. It is guessed that about 4.9 million work days a year are lost to back pain.
The Chief Investigator, Professor David Torgerson said, " While previous studies have focused on the short-term benefits of yoga, we also wanted to see the long-term effects and measured improvements three, six and 12 months after entry into the study. Our results showed that yoga can provide both short and long-term benefits to those suffering from chronic or recurrent back pain, without any serious side-effects.”
While the study is great news for back pain sufferers and health enthusiasts I wouldn't recommend trying to see if you can do a pretzel-like pose, just yet. The evidence from the study also showed that meditation and learning to be calm and relaxed was also a major part in the recovery not just during the 12 weeks of of one class a week, but also in the time afterwards. It was noted that a large number of those surveyed had carried on doing yoga practise at home even 9 months after the classes (the final questionnaire).
