Type2 Diabetes can be offset by yoga.

NEWS

A recent study has found that Yoga is a beneficial therapy in addition to standard care in reducing many of the symptoms of Type2 Diabetes.  The study which has been promoted by the American Diabetes Association found significant reduction in oxidative stress, BMI and an improved glycemic control.

Researches from the Manipal University in India studied 123 patients for 3 months measuring the effects of standard care or standard care plus a yoga programme.

Dr. Shreelaxmi V. Hegde of the Srinivas Institute of Medical Science and Research Center told Reuters:

"...it should be noted that yoga controlled the blood sugar levels which otherwise rose in the control group.”

It should be noted however that not all yoga is the same, there is a marked difference between the styles of Iyengar and Bikram for instance.  If you are thinking of doing any form of yoga be sure to check your instructor is confident to work with your condition and that you feel safe.

The teacher should also encourage you to progressively improve your asanas so you may have to go outside your comfort zones from time to time, but it should be done safely and in a controlled manner.
