There is a very famous story (debated to its authenticity) of how NASA spent $12million developing a pen that would write in Space while the Cosmonauts of the USSR filled the gap for using a tool to write in space with a pencil.
(This was probably before they learnt how to type?)
Truth or Fiction, the story is used, very much like the old Zen stories, to illustrate many points of view.
The following development credited to NASA may be just that again. The chap talking appears to make sense. Tries to blind us with his amasing theories and a little evidence to back up his product. I believe it will make him a rich man, in the same way that those vibration plates have become so popular.
For those of you not so into the science of the human body, what he is describing is a way to promote the body's secretion of natural growth hormones. He backs up his theories stating that as we exercise less into our adult lives we produce less of it. Apparently his cooling device will allow you to create more growth hormone in less time.
Is it fun though? Do you get the same feelings as going for a run in the p*ssing rain then getting home to a nice warm bath/shower? Do you get the same peace as from holding yoga asanas for 10 or 15 minutes? Do you get the same rush of adrenaline/endorphins as when you are doing the 5th or 6th set of a circuit or wind-sprints? Or the fluid feelings of swimming through the water?
The gyms are littered with little used PowerPlates, they have tried to push them, tried to convince naive trainers that they are what you want (who in turn try to convince you that its what you want, until you try to convince yourself its what you want). Maybe this is just another piece of dead gym equipment? Maybe it will work?
The pencil worked (apparently) for writing in Space, the human body is probably now weaker than it has been throughout at least the last 3000 years (especially in the developed world) and we keep developing new 'technology' to make us 'stronger'. Maybe its time to look at what already works or has worked and teach that to people before we try to re-invent exercise.
