Meditation now shown to assist in PTSD

NEWS

Hot on the heels of the Indian Police using Yoga to de-stress and become fitter we have the US Army being briefed to use Yoga and specifically meditation techniques to overcome Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Dr. Norman Rosenthal, a clinical professor at Georgetown Medical School said he has the facts, figures and testimonials to show that meditation could be a low-cost, low-risk alternative to the strong narcotics often prescribed by government doctors.

Brig. Gen. Richard Thomas, the US Army's Surgeon General, has publicly voiced opinion about the over-use of prescription drugs, he said "It reflects how we are in society. We do have a tendency to rely on prescription meds". At the Pentagon, Thomas said "Whether it be acupuncture or bio-feedback or yoga therapy, there is a host of other things we can provide to patients to take care of them right, other than narcotics...Narcotics may still have a role but it doesn't have as big a role and there are alternatives, and that's the key."

Based on his current research Dr. Rosenthal believes that meditation can help an individual control their emotions, anxiety, depression, sleeplessness, depression and anger.

World-renowned psychiatrist, Dr. Rosenthal already has a history of bringing public attention to his research, when he was one of the pioneers of diagnosing and treating SAD.
