Just another quick note on NOT using a gym to train in. The last time I actually trained in a gym (using machines et al) was about 4 or 5 years ago. This was only as I had a position which meant I had nowhere else to go BUT the gym. Since leaving the gym atmosphere though, I have to say I feel so much more free. No more running on a treadmill like a gerbil in a cage, no more strutting egos to see who can occupy the most amount of space or equipment or tell you how 'wrong' your method of training is.
Training in my regular environment is what is good for me. Obviously not running down Oxford Street on a saturday afternoon (although I have seen people do it) but the park, common, streets around where I live. Using benches, walls, trees (not in the Royal Parks though Officer) using my body in the way it was meant to be, and over generations, has been. Jumping, pushing, pulling, twisting running, walking, this is how I was meant to move and how I want to be. This transfers more easily into real life. If I cross the street and see a barrier in my way, I just jump it, no thought about (something I see people half my age unable to do), going up stairs, I just bound up them without panting for breath at the end, running for buses, carrying heavy items, carrying my bag of daily essentials, helping people move/lift heavy objects, even something as simple as bending down to tie my shoelaces. In essence it feels more like being a human being and part of society. There doesn't have to be a competition at the end of it and there's no pressure to be the best. Hitting the streets and leaving the gym has been the best decision I made.
