Stretching

I have been asked about the importance of stretching. One of my clients had overheard some people with Personal Trainer T-shirts on debating quite loudly the importance of stretching. The overall opinion of these people was that stretching isn't necessary and that there was scientific proof to show this.

Now there is a right and a wrong side to this. As with any information it can be used and abused by those with a little knowledge. I suspect the information they were talking about could have been the study on how static stretching before training doesn't really show any signs of reducing injury in that study group.
However, stretching afterwards is definitely of prime importance and controlled dynamic stretching has other benefits including preparing the mind and nervous system for the work ahead.

There are many arguments for and against stretching, and I agree that there could be times when stretching is either unnecessary or wholly necessary. What is important is that you understand when is the right time to do what kind of stretches. Some dynamic stretching could help the muscles store more CP. Some more isometric/static stretching could help flush out waste products.

Remember there is more to the body than a few scientific studies and there always seems to be a new exception to the rules. Make sure the advice you get is as impartial and the people giving aren't just spouting out chinese whispers 10th hand.

Keep training hard guys!
