New research by the Macmillan Cancer Trust shows that people are now living for up to six times longer after cancer has been diagnosed than 40 years ago.
The actual report is here.
The research shows that there has been real progress on the overall management of cancer, although the specific cancers can vary greatly. Although there has been a dramatic improvement in breast, colon and Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma where survival can be assessed in years. There hasn't been much, if any improvement in lung, brain or pancreatic cancers where survival is normally assessed in weeks. (all figures to date)
Colon cancer has seen one of the greatest improvements, with up to 17 times the length of survival recorded. Even though the other cancers such as brain and lung cancer only increased slightly, there was an increase in the time a person survived.
Once people have been diagnosed with cancer it can be extremely helpful to the quality of life to participate in exercise as shown here and/or meditation as shown here.
