Beijing, China.
It seems that just as some in the Western World are becoming more conversant with Eastern culture and traditions, those from the Asian continent are displaying similar sympathies for the culture of the Western World.
Weight-loss camps are becoming popular with the Chinese people now that there is a huge rise in obesity. Some reports state that there is an estimated 429million overweight Chinese (about a third of the country) and further estimates suggest that they are only second to Mexico for obesity growth in any developing nation.
The Bodyworks weight loss centre in Beijing charges 30,000CNY ($4,700) for the participants to live on site and follow a healthy regime of 6 hours exercise balanced around some healthy meals. The participants ranging in age from 7 - 55 years do a mixture of weight training, yoga, running and football.
Participants will normally be expected to stay for about 6 weeks and if they see it through to the end have had some really amasing results. One of the participants interviewed had been admitted with high blood pressure, trouble walking and breathing properly and a weight of 150kg. She said she found the first few weeks very hard and kept phoning her parents and asking to leave. After a year though, she dropped 50kg.
Mu Ge, sales manager at Bodyworks, gave his questionable response: "In the UK only poor people will eat junk food and become fat, in China, it's the opposite. The more money you have, the fatter you are. It's almost as if it's proof that living standards have improved."
Whatever the reasons, it has become a global epidemic now. Even more reason to sit up and take note of how to improve your life. If you're going to become a statistic, at least become one of those who may live a little longer and enjoy life.
