Facing Reality

Make sure you are setting REALISTIC goals. Setting yourself goals which you cannot achieve is actually the best way to set yourself up as an under-achiever. Not a very motivating place to be in. Also, we need to watch that we aren't setting ourselves pointless goals, a goal should be something we want to do that we don't currently do.
One of the best things you can do is to assess where you are now.
What are your strengths, the areas you do well that you can still achieve more in?
What are your weaknesses, the areas you would like to improve?
Along with this first self-assessment you must be careful not to see anything as something to be got rid of, but to accept that this is where you are and you will be moving on from here.
Humans really don't respond well to negative motivation over the long-term. Many studies have proved this. You also need to make sure you aren't being delusional though.
Too many people can blur positive motivation with a lack of being real. If you have a fat gut (it might be painful to admit it) realise this. There actually isn't anything 'wrong' with having excess fat though. Accept that this is where you are and that if you want to change this situation, it's possible.
Similarly, if you know you are lazy, admit this to yourself also (it's ok you don't have to let anyone else know). Accept all facts about yourself, but also realise that if you want to change, there is a way to do it and it's possible. Change is one of the most beautiful parts of life.
