Journey into coding

Anyone who has been following my blog posts, no matter how sporadic (thanks to all those who have been keeping in contact). Will know I have adapted to change over the years.

After a lifetime of fitness and meditation, pursuing nutritional knowledge as it has adapted to scientific discoveries over the years, and developing building, writing and farming skills; I have started to update my skills in the tech field.

As a kid, I loved coding. My uncle had a commodore 64 and I remember coding a very simple morse code generator on it. My sister had a spectrum 128, I had a BBC micro and my parent had what was called an ACT Sirius machine (if I remember correctly). I learnt how to program all of these or at least use the command line as there wasn't really any GUI to speak of back then. My own computer, the BBC Micro was my field of expertise, I would code in BASIC all sorts of entertaining games to keep myself amused. Mostly also because the official games we would have took ages to load as they were generally on cassette and took 20 minutes to load sometimes.

I lost the will to code when the computer teacher at my school decided the way forward was Machine Code language. He was convinced that was the way we would get careers. Maybe in the 80's that was an option, but it totally bummed me out and I went off to learn CDT instead (which helped me for my future building work).

With the recent lockdown, there was little chance of me getting face to face clients and as I was just at the phase of rebuilding my client base back in March 2020, didn't have the resources to advertise an online campaign. In fact, the people that I lived with were planning on using other trainers' online workout sessions, so my skills in advertising were obviously lacking.

Then came the idea to start delving into the areas I had once loved. I had heard about python, had done a little html and css in the old myspace years, and run on linux since about 2010. I dipped my toes in the water of coding once more.

What I have found has been an amasing journey that has really opened my mind. In just four months I have spent almost 8 - 10 hours a day studying and building projects. I have been doing challenges and learning a load of new skills that have an extended scope for creativity.

I have had the most fortunate experiences of getting trained from professors of Harvard, Stanford and Michigan Universities. It has taken me to a new level of discipline. Thinking outside the box and finding solutions to so many problems has challenged me in ways I could never have imagined. I have become proficient in HTML5, CSS3, Javascript, Python, C, SQL and bash. I have a huge plan that allows me to improve and keep on improving. It sometimes feels like my brain is really growing, I am definitely making new neural connections and enjoying my daily challenges.

Web and computing can be done over satellite and solar power if you don't want to be on the network. For anyone who wants to try this, start with something like scratch from MIT.

This area of knowledge really helps to round us as we go into the new technical era. I hope to be able to give my thoughts on this more as I develop and maybe will post some of my github repos to share also. This was a quick post to help get me back into regular updates.

Stay Healthy,
